Singapore Botanic Gardens, founded in 1859 by the Agri-Horticultural Society but taken over by the government and officially opened to the public in 1874. The experimental planting of rubber trees here, initiated by its first Director Henry Nicholas Ridley, led to the founding of rubber industry in Malaya.
