How he was recruited into Nanyang Siang Pau in 1972 as a reporter and represented the newspaper in table tennis competitions. Memory of football fans in the Malaysian Cup soccer games. Interviewing fans of the opposing teams. Why newspapers would not interview soccer referees who were on duty. He was a sports reporter for 30 years – from Nanyang Siang Pau to Lianhe Wanbao. He was promoted to head of the sports section in Lianhe Wanbao in 1999. His work as Head of section. Keeping contact with informants. How hiring of reporters, writing styles and choice of words changed in the 1990s. Younger reporters tend to write in a more “English way” as seen in translated stories. Courses organized by the newspaper. Effects on newspaper operation: changes in typesetting layout (from vertical typesetting right to left view to horizontal typesetting left to right view) and use of simplified Chinese characters. How computer technology affected newspaper operation, for example use of Hanyu Pinyin in typing. The reporter has three roles: reporting, typing and typesetting. His experience in using the computer in reporting.
