SUPPORT FOR SINGAPORE’S DISABLED ATHLETES AT THE INAUGURAL ASIAN YOUTH PARA GAMES IN TOKYO

A twenty-strong contingent from Team Singapore will be part of the inaugural Asian Youth Para Games, to be held from 10 to 13 September in Tokyo. The Games will commence with the Opening Ceremony on 10 September, and competition events from 11 to 13 September. Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, will be attending the Games from 10 to 12 September to show support for our youth para-athletes.

2   The Asian Youth Para Games is a multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities. This year’s event will involve the participation of approximately 1000 participants from countries all over Asia, in 6 sports – Athletes, Boccia, Goalball, Swimming, Table Tennis and Wheelchair Tennis as a demonstration sport. Eight youth athletes will be representing Singapore in Athletics, Boccia and Swimming.

3   The objective of the Games is to contribute to the development of the Paralympic movement throughout the Asian region and around the world; strengthen bonds among the participating countries; as well as encourage youth athletes to step forward to pursue their dreams, and nurture resilience and determination through sports. This vision is represented by the slogan for this year’s Games; “Your Dream, Our Legacy”.

4   Mr Teo said, “I am excited to be in the midst of the competition atmosphere to cheer on our youth para-athletes, and hope we will continue to see increased participation among youth at such sports meets in the coming years. As we strive to strengthen our overall youth sports system to create a long term youth pipeline in Singapore, we will ensure that we provide all-inclusive opportunities to encourage more participation among our local youth, whether able or disabled.”
