OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY OF ARMY OPEN HOUSE 2007
ARMY OPEN HOUSE 07 – WHERE OUR STORY COMES ALIVE
1. In conjunction with the commemoration of 40 years of National Service, the Singapore Army hosted the Army Open House 07 (AOH 07) for a period of five days from 30th Aug to 3rd September. Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the opening ceremony in Pasir Laba Camp this morning. Dr Ng toured the Open House with the chairman and members of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs, and the Members of the People's Association Women's Executive Committee.
2. Dr Ng also launched the Leopard tank at AOH 07. The Leopard is more
superior in terms of capabilities compared to the SM1 Tank that it is eventually
replacing. The Leopard offers enhanced mobility and lethality, and most
importantly, it is a flexible platform that allows future upgrades and integration with
other systems of the 3rd generation Singapore Armed Forces.
3. The AOH 07 aims to highlight the Army’s capabilities and engage the
people with a holistic and interactive experience. Divided into seven worlds
(Combat World, Action World, A.C.E. World, Future World, Xtreme World,
Mission World and Battle Ride World), the AOH 07 gives visitors the opportunity
to view a full range of equipment in the Army; participate in thrilling and interactive
activities; and be awed by the Army's fire power. For the first time, visitors can
set foot on some of the familiar training knolls such as Peng Kang hill and FOFO
hill where they can have a glimpse of a soldier’s life in the field and at the same
time enjoy the panoramic view of the Live Firing Area.
4. On a lighter note, Dr Ng was presented a copy of the comic book titled In My
time from its NSman author, Benjamin Lee – better known as popular blogger
Mr Miyagi – who shared his National Service experience in a light-hearted
manner.
5. Earlier, on 30 Aug 07, members of the Advisory Council on Community
Relations in Defence (ACCORD), were joined by representatives from the
Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF), Singapore Chinese
Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) and the Association of Small and
Medium Enterprises (ASME) in a visit to the AOH 07. The visit was hosted by
Minister of State for Defence Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee.

AOH 2007 – WHERE OUR STORY COMES ALIVE
1. Army Open House (AOH) 2007 is the fifth AOH since it began in 1997. This year, it will be held at Pasir Laba Camp for the first time, from 30 Aug to 3 Sep 2007. Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen will be officiating at the opening ceremony on 1 Sep 2007.
2. AOH 2007 will showcase new fighting concepts and capabilities of the 3rd Generation Army. It will see the Army having better situation awareness through richer and more accurate information (precision information), getting to the desired destination faster (precision manoeuvre), and engaging the potential aggressor with precision (precision fires).
3. The AOH has been thematically organised into seven ‘Worlds’ to allow visitors to see what it takes to be a soldier in the 3rd Generation Army. Visitors can catch the Army in action, get a feel of soldiering skills, and experience moving through a battlefield in the Army’s suite of combat vehicles, and catch a glimpse of what the Army of the future will be like. Besides the action and adventure, visitors can also check out the Army story by going on a heritage tour and revisiting the good old days.
4. AOH 07 constitutes part of the commemoration of 40 years of National Service, which honours the many Singaporeans who have served, and continue to serve, with loyalty and dedication. National Service has grown to be a rite of passage for all Singaporean men and a key moulding pillar of our nation’s defence. People are the cutting edge of the Army, capable, confident, and operationally ready. They are the heart of the fighting core and the pride of the Army.
