PRESS RELEASE

APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF EXECUTIVE

LAND TRANSPORT AUTHORITY

Mr Ho Meng Kit will be appointed Chief Executive, Land Transport Authority (LTA), with effect from 15 July 2003. He will replace Mr Han Eng Juan, who will be retiring from the Public Service.

Mr Ho was an SAF (Overseas) scholar and graduated with an Engineering degree from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Upon graduation in 1978, he served in the Ministry of Defence, the Prime Ministers Office, the Ministry of Information and The Arts, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and the Economic Development Board as its Managing Director. He is also currently a member of the LTA Board. Mr Ho last held the appointment of Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, prior to pursuing an Advanced Management Programme at the Harvard Business School in the United States.

Mr Han Eng Juan has been CE, LTA since July 1998. During his term of office, Singapores road and rail network were expanded significantly. The rail network grew from 83 km to 128 km with the completion of the Woodlands Extension, the Changi Airport MRT Extension, and the soon-to be opened North-East Line. Mr Han also saw through the implementation of two Light Rapid Transit systems at Bukit Panjang and Sengkang new town. Major road projects completed include the Upper Serangoon four-tier interchange, Telok Blangah semi-expressway, and the extension of Dairy Farm Road and Middle Road. Under his leadership, he also launched the Kallang/Paya Lebar Expressway and the Circle Line, which are both under construction.

Mr Han was also a key driver in harnessing the use of technology to manage Singapores land transport system and improve LTAs services to the public. Significant milestones include the introduction of the COE Open Bidding System, automation of VEP fees and toll payment at checkpoints, launch of the One.motoring portal (which offers online payment of road tax and enquiry of vehicle information), as well as the ezlink card.

The Government wishes to place on record its appreciation to Mr Han Eng Juan for his contributions towards the development of Singapores land transport sector.
