OPENING ADDRESS BY RADM TEO CHEE HEAN, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND SECOND MINISTER FOR DEFENCE, MP FOR PASIR RIS - PUNGGOL GRC, PASIR RIS WEST RESIDENTS’ DAY AND COMPLETION CEREMONY FOR PASIR RIS 21 COMMUNITY ESTATE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT ON 23 MARCH 2003 AT 10.45AM AT BLK 504 PASIR RIS ST 52

Good morning and a very warm welcome to all the residents joining us here at the Pasir Ris West Residents’ Day on this Sunday morning. This is a great opportunity for residents of all races to enjoy a fun-filled day and interact with one another.

I hope that through this bonding and interaction, our residents will better understand each other and grow stronger as a community, which is especially important during these crucial times.

Today, we will also commemorate the completion for our Pasir Ris Community Estate Improvement Project. Our grassroots leaders, with the help of the Town Council’s Project Committee, have devoted tremendous amount of thought, time and effort to work with the various authorities, in achieving the improved estate as you see it today. As such, I would like to thank them for their dedicated service to our community.

Under the Pasir Ris 21 Project, residents here at Pasir Ris St 52 were privileged to be the first to enjoy facilities such as, just to name a few, the Riverdeck near Block 508, a mini traffic park for children and clock tower at the Concourse here, a riverside Barbecue Pavilion near Block 515, new concept fitness corners and drop-off car porches at both entrances to the estate.

A Residents’ Corner and Senior Citizens’ Corner have also been added to promote and enhance the interaction within this community. All in all, the estate here was fully transformed with the residents’ and community’s needs in mind, giving this estate a unique character and a distinct identity within Pasir Ris.

In view of our never-ending pursuit for improvement and excellence in Pasir Ris, Phase Two of the Pasir Ris 21 Community Mall Project will commence soon in the fourth quarter of this year.

In Phase Two, we can expect to see this Community Mall stretching across Pasir Ris West as well, linking the East and West ends of our town.

The new cycling tracks will blend or run alongside with existing pedestrian pathways or tracks. The route linking Pasir Ris East to Pasir Ris West will encompass a proposed cycling track round Seashell Park, leading into the existing pathway in Neighbourhood 4 estate through to Pasir Ris Town Park.

Within Pasir Ris West, a new proposed track will run along Pasir Ris Drive 1, across the MRT station and leading into this estate. From here, it should be a smooth ride across Sungei Api Api and towards the soon-to-be-built Pasir Ris Elias Community Building, near Elias Mall.

Thereon, after taking a shortcut through Neighbourhood 6, another proposed new track will run alongside of Pasir Ris Drive 10, turning back into Pasir Ris Drive 1 again to finish off at Pasir Ris West Plaza.

Being a ‘Bicycle Town’, we believe that Phase Two will be a favourite with our avid cyclist residents and even joggers. This will also contribute to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle amongst our residents.

Here in Pasir Ris, we will do our best to bring newer and better facilities to our residents. However, we would also like to take this chance to seek the co-operation of all our residents in keeping these new facilities clean and free from vandalism so that others can get to enjoy them too.

Thank you once again for coming and I hope you’ll have an enjoyable day with us.
