PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE
CABINET AND OTHER APPOINTMENTS
The Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues will be sworn into office by the President at 5.00 pm on Friday, 23 November 2001, at the State Room, Istana.
Annex I lists the members of the new Cabinet and other office-holders and their portfolios. Their appointments will be with effect from 23 November 2001 unless otherwise stated.
Annex I also lists the five Mayors of CDCs (Community Development Councils). They will be appointed wef 24 November 2001 and sworn in on 5 January 2002.
Annex II lists the Ministries and their office-holders.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will be renamed the Ministry of Transport. Its portfolio of Information Technology and Telecommunications will be transferred to the Ministry of Information and the Arts which will be renamed Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (abbreviated to MITA).
At the end of one year, Dr Lee Boon Yang and Mr David Lim will exchange their Ministerial portfoliosMinistries..
RAdm Teo Chee Hean has asked Dr Tony Tan to continue to help him oversee the development of the university sector. He finds the current arrangement productive and good.
When Parliament opens on 25 March 2002, it will elect Mr Abdullah Tarmugi to succeed Mr Tan Soo Khoon as Speaker. Mr Abdullah Tarmugi will relinquish his appointment as Minister for Community Development and Sports on 24 March 2002. Assoc Prof Yaacob Ibrahim will succeed him as Acting Minister. He will also take over from Mr Abdullah Tarmugi as be the Minister Minister-in- charge of Muslim Affairs.
Mr David Lim will relinquish his appointment as Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, after Mr Cedric Foo has settled down in his appointment as Minister of State, Ministry of Defence.
Mr Chan Soo Sen will be seconded on a part-time basis to help out in the NTUC.
Seven new MPs are being appointed Senior Ministers of State/Ministers of State. Ideally, they should first spend some time as back-benchers to gain experience in the political arena. But as time is short to build a new Cabinet for 2007 and beyond, they are being appointed immediately so that their leadership skills and political sensitivity can be assessed early.
Further Cabinet changes are planned in mid-term.
Retired Office-Holders
The Prime Minister thanks the following office-holders who have retired for their past valuable services and contributions:
(a) Dr Richard Hu Tsu Tau � Minister for Finance
(b) Dr Aline Wong � Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education
(c) Mr Sidek Saniff � Senior Minister of State, Ministry of the Environment
(d) Mr Peter Chen � Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry
(e) Dr Ow Chin Hock � Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
(f) Mr Harun Abdul Ghani � Political Secretary to the Minister for Home Affairs
(g) Mr Zulkifli Mohamad � Political Secretary to the Minister without Portfolio.
Dr John Chen has asked not to be re-appointed as he wishes to resume his private sector career. The Prime Minister thanks him for his valuable contributions and services as Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology & Ministry of National Development.
