SPEECH BY RADM TEO CHEE HEAN, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND SECOND MINISTER FOR DEFENCE AND MP FOR PASIR RIS GRC AT THE 21st CENTURY LUNAR NEW YEAR CUM CHARITY DINNER ORGANISED BY PASIR RIS ZONE 10 RC ON SUNDAY 13 FEB 2000 AT 8.30PM AT THE CAR PARK NEAR BLK 104 PASIR RIS ST 12

Mr Charles Chong, MP for Pasir Ris GRC,

Mr Alan Tai, PBM, Chairman Pasir Ris Loyang CCC,

Mr Cheok Boon Hua, Organising Chairman,

Mdm Josephine Tan, Chairperson Pasir Ris Zone 10 Residents Committee,

grassroots leaders, residents, and friends.

I am happy to see so many of you today at this Lunar New Year Dinner organised by Pasir Ris Zone 10 RC.

Lunar New Year, like the major festivals celebrated by other communities in Singapore, is an occasion for us to build our bonds, particularly within our families. Strong families are the key to meeting both the needs of senior citizens and the aspirations of the young. Within a strong family, the young can be nurtured, and senior citizens can live with respect and dignity.

Celebrating major festivals in Singapore is also very important for retaining our culture and values especially as Singapore becomes more global and cosmopolitan. As we become a world city, we need to further strengthen our sense of identity. It is therefore very important that we maintain our heritage. Within the context of our multi-racial society, every community should be encouraged to preserve and promote the best of its culture and values through activities and programmes. And it is heartening that in Singapore every community can join in the celebrations and good wishes during the festivals of other communities.

I am also heartened to see that while celebrating Lunar New Year, Pasir Ris Zone 10 RC has not forgotten those who are less fortunate. The RC has successfully garnered the support of our residents to donate foodstuffs for distribution to various welfare homes. This spirit of self-help and active volunteerism is worthy of emulation as we develop an active people sector in Singapore.

Lastly, may I wish all of you a very prosperous and a happy Lunar New Year. Thank you.
