PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE
The President acting in his discretion and in concurrence with the advice of the Prime Minister is pleased to appoint the Honourable Justice Chao Hick Tin to be a Judge of Appeal with effect from 2 August 1999.
2 Justice Chao was born in Singapore on 28 September 1942. He received his LL.B from the University College of London in 1965 and was called to the Bar as a barrister of the Middle Temple that same year. He obtained an LL.M from the University College of London in 1966 and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1971.
3 In 1967, he joined the Singapore Legal Service as a State Counsel in the Attorney-General’s Chambers and served as a Senior State Counsel from 1979-1987. He was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner on 1 October 1987 and later appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court in November 1990. He also serves as the President of the Industrial Arbitration Court, a post to which he was appointed in 1993.
