Synopsis :Recording contains five speeches by S Dhanabalan, Ong Pang Boon and Lim Chee Onn at four separate functions.
1) Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs S Dhanabalan opens the Seminar on Trade with China at Shangri-La Hotel, Gardenia Room (on 11/10/1979). He says the seminar, organised by Business Times and Applied Research Corporation, comes in the wake of intense world interest in China. He adds it is worth considering how ASEAN could play an intermediary role between China and the Western industrialised economies and believes Singapore could play a useful role as a link in the commercial links between foreign investors and China. (Duration: 00:06:06)
2) Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs S Dhanabalan opens the Symposium on 'The Role of Financial Institutions in 1980's' and the Meeting of Presidents at RELC Auditorium (on 03/11/1979). He says the quality and the strength of the political leadership determine the course of a nation. Singapore when it becomes independent in 1965, there are many prophets of doom, but because of its political leadership, Singapore is a success. He comments on the well-educated cream of Singapore's youth wanting to be left alone to pursue their own careers and fortunes, but few ask what should be done to ensure peace and stability continue. He stresses there is a need for the best talent of a country to be spread in all key areas, including politics. Free enterprise democracies, as in Singapore need political leadership that is able to match the new generation of political leaders and the cream of their society as in communist countries. (Duration: 00:12:33)
3) Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs S Dhanabalan opens Bauman Spring Company Pte Ltd at 5 Wan Shih Road (on 12/11/1979). He points out Singapore is Baumann Spring's first factory outside Europe and the 4th location in the world to produce precision springs. The major factor for Baumann's decision is the size of Singapore market. He believes that Singapore could be a significant home market in a number of specialised areas, such as variety of equipment and products for infrastructure development. Therefore he says it is not totally correct when publications dismiss Singapore market as one of no consequence. (Duration: 00:06:00)
4) Minister for Labour Ong Pang Boon and Secretary-General of NTUC Lim Chee Onn at the Singapore Bank Employees' Union's (SBEU) Silver Jubilee Dinner at Neptune Theatre Restaurant (on 17/11/1979).
Ong Pang Boon talks about the development of Singapore into a sophisticated international financial centre; Singapore's success depending on the efficiency, diligence and discipline of the workers; the peaceful and cordial industrial relations climate prevailing in the financial sector; SBEU's role in maintaining industrial harmony in the banking industry and various welfare schemes for members.
Lim Chee Onn says the 'SBEU has come of age' showing its 'maturity and wisdom' in its awards given to banks for 1979. The banking and financial sector has an important role to play in the future of Singapore. He believes both management and union should give priority to two areas, one automate and computerise the operations area, which need skilled workers, and the other industry-wide collective agreements. He touches on training and reraining of workers to upgrade their skills and elaborates on the NTUC programme for training.
