  • Synopsis :

At the opening ceremony of the 'Keep Singapore Clean and Mosquito Free Campaign', Health Minister Chua Sian Chin says that the first Keep Singapore Clean Campaign inaugurated last year created a lot of awareness amongst schoolchildren and adults on the need to keep Singapore clean. This year, the campiagn will focus on keeping Singapore mosquito free. This tiny insect is the cause of diseases like haemorrhagic fever and dengue. Malaria is practically non-existent in Singapore except for occasional outbreaks in the outlying islands. The campaign will focus on educating the public on recognising common mosquito breeding places and putting into effect simple measures to prevent the breeding of the next generation of mosquitoes. Cooperation from every household in Singapore is indispensable for the campaign to succeed. Minister for Education Ong Pang Boon then notes that keeping Singapore clean and healthy is a collective responsibility and not the sole responsibility of the Ministry of Health. As good health habits start early, the Education Ministry will educate pupils on how to have a clean, mosquito free environment. An inter-school competition will select the ten cleanest schools in Singapore and a poster design competition on the campaign's theme will be held. Regular inspections of classrooms, tuckshops, toilets and the school grounds will be made to check against mosquito breeding. Mr Ong then declares the campaign open.
