Synopsis :1) Singapore-Parliament: Minister for National Development S Dhanabalan tells Parliament of the new rules setting a cap on the ‘maximum proportions of each racial group allowed’ in every Housing and Development Board estate and setting another cap on the ‘maximum proportions allowed in each HDB block’. He adds the new measures will apply to the allocation of new flats and resale flats and will come in force on March 1. (00:00:47)
2) Singapore-Parliament: Parliament has passed the Minor Offences (Amendment) Bill to handle the touts issue. Another Bill passed is the Economic Development Board (Amendment) Bill. (00:06:23)
3) Sri Lanka: The ruling United National Party has been returned to office for another six years , after winning 110 seats, while the Sri Lanka Freedom Party or SLFP has 58 seats. (00:07:48)
4) Afghanistan-Soviet Union-United States: This item has two separate reports. First, Afghan nationalist leaders meeting in Pakistan have produced a proposal for an interim government as the last Soviet troops exit Afghanistan. Second, within hours of the Soviets leaving Afghanistan, United States Secretary of State James Baker, now in Madrid at the end of his visit, is asking the Soviet Union to assist in rebuilding the country. 8) Britain-Rushdie: Protests are still brewing in Britain and Iran over the novel, The Satanic Verses’ by Salman Rushdie, who is lying low from Iranian Muslim fundamentalists wanting to kill him. (00:14:21)
9) Singapore: Police Constable Mirza Abdul Halim, shot in the head yesterday as he was detaining a suspect, died today. For his act of courage, PC Mirza and a fellow policeman, Benny Goh Soon Wan also involved in the incident, are promoted to Corporal. (00:18:27)
10) Peru: Unionists claim a ‘right wing death squad’ is responsible for the killing of Saul Cantoral, leader of Peru’s Miners Federation. (00:19:38)
11) France: A building in the ‘historic centre’ of Toulon collapsed after an explosion and according to the police, at least 11 people were killed and 35 others injured. (00:20:24)
12) Lebanon: Government army troops and Christian militia are observing a truce following a day of heavy fighting leaving 50 people killed and injuring more than 100. (00:21:19)
13) Singapore: Some students find out more about the ‘new science of bio-technology’ at the Singapore Polytechnic. (00:22:23)
14) Singapore: First Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, speaking at a Chinese New Year dinner of Marine Parade Merchants and Hawkers’ Association, urges people to ‘have a child if they could afford one without bothering about the ‘animal sign’, adding that he is a ‘little worried’ about a possible drop of 20 percent in birth rate for this year.
