Records contain small booklet entitled 'The Last Days of Freedom. Singapore to Sumatra, February 15th - March 17th 1942'. Working as a rubber planter in Malaya and a member of the Johore Volunteer Engineers. Unit was attached to the 1st Mysore Infantry, stationed at Kluang and was commissioned on 18th Dec at Fort Canning. Sent to defend the NW of Singapore and then across the Causeway to Pengerang. Desperate need for air cover. Heard about the surrender on the BBC. Account of escape into Sumatra. Arrived at Rengat along with other boatloads of escapees.
