01/01/1968 to 31/12/1969
Record file contains reports and correspondence concerning moves by the British government, prompted by Amnesty International, to have Low Tai Thong (who had been a political detainee since 1956) released in order for him to study in the UK and then settle in Sweden. Correspondence relating to his status. Transpires he is a citizen of the U.K. and colonies. If Singapore deports him, he has to be accepted in the UK as a political refugee. He could, therefore, settle in the UK after his studies. Account of his release and the press conference on his arrival in the UK where he alleges brutality on the part of the Singapore authorities. Accounts of the episode from the British and Singapore press. Some pages have been retained by the Department. Need to apply under FOI. Not to be released (May 2006)
