Foreign Secret Cons 23 Nov 1840 No. 23-6 - Letter from S J Bonham, Governor, Prince of Wales Island, Singapore and Malacca, to T H Maddock, Secretary to Government, Fort William, acknowledging letter with enclosures from Mr Torrens, Officiating Secretary and noting that the Home authorities 'do not consider the entire subjugation of Sumatra by the Dutch an infraction of the treaty (signed on 17 Mar 1824).'  Governor Bonham then set forth certain transactions of the Dutch which he deems 'are very detrimental to the Settlements in the Straits.'  Enclosed with the letter are: 1) extract of the four first Articles of the Treaty concluded between Great Britain and Holland at London on 17 Mar 1824; and 2) copy of petition of 'Merchants and Inhabitants of Singapore' regarding perceived violations on the part of the Dutch on trade in the Eastern Archipelago, with respect to the 17 Mar 1824 Treaty signed between Great Britain and the Netherlands.
