Foreign Pol. Cons. 13 Oct 1858 No. 3 - Letter from the Secretary of State to the Governor General of India in Council, transmitting his opinions on the Straits Settlements Narratives for the forth quarter of 1855 and first quarter of 1856. Subjects discussed include:
1) advance of $5000 made to the King of Quedah, the rejection of the application for further advances and approval procedures for future requests for advances;
2) suppression of piracy, specifically the need for the Governor to be invested with more power to deal with pirates. There is also mention of Act XII of 1857 'to authorize the arrest & detention within the Ports of the Settlement of Prince of Wales Island, Singapore & Malacca of Junks or Native Vessels suspected to be piratical', and the inefficiency of "Hooghly" and "Auckland" against piracy;
3) alleged detention of the mother and son of the Sultan of Linga by the Rajah of Tringanu, an incident which the British had sent the steamer "Hooghly" to resolve;
4) complaint by a 'Chinaman' of an attack made on his boat by a group of Malays at the 'New Harbour', the residence of the Tomungong of Johore and the Tomungong's corresponding response; and
5) proposal by the Tomungong of Johore to modify the Treaty of 1824.
