Foreign Secret Cons. 4 Mar 1825 No. 9-10 - Letter from J Crawfurd, Resident at Singapore, to George Swinton, Secretary to the Government at Fort William, seeking approval and ratification for the Treaty of 1824 signed with the Sultan and Tumungung of Johore for the cession of Singapore. It is mentioned that the cession is 'not confined to the main island of Singapore alone, but extends to the Seas, Straits and Islets (the latter probably not less than 50 in number) within ten geographical miles of its coasts', and that the area coming under British control would 'embrace the Old Straits of Singapore, and the important passage of the Rabbit and Coney the main channels through the Straits of Malacca'. A copy of the Treaty is included in the record.
