WO 203/4995: Reconsideration of the 'Culverin' plan to seize and hold North Sumatra visit to Axiom party to Far East to discuss alternative plans
01/01/1944 - 31/12/1944
Correspondence and papers pertaining to Operation 'Culverin' plans. Axiom members and Directors of Plans met to discuss amphibious possibilities in South East Asia Command (SEAC) on 8 Apr 1944. War Staff note (44) 7 stated that the objective of the operation is to establish offensive air bases in Sumatra from which SEAC can provide maximum air support for action in the Pacific and to establish bases for subsequent operations against the Japanese defensive perimeter by major amphibious advances. Outline of the plan is to seize and hold North Sumatra, including the Medan area, by-pass defences at Sabang and reduce the effectiveness of the airfields therein.
