WO 203/4895: Operation 'Culverin' capture of North Sumatra: planning papers and correspondence

South East Asia Command (SEAC) planning papers and correspondence pertaining to Operation 'Culverin' capture of North Sumatra. War Staff paper (44) 63 stated that the objective of Operation 'Culverin' is to secure an area in North Sumatra in order to provide naval and air facilities for subsequent operations against Malaya and the remainder of the NEI area. The plan covered: topographical factors; sea and weather conditions; the terrain; beaches; medical conditions; enemy forces and installations; naval, air, engineering and tactical considerations; and the conclusion on bridgehead area required need only be large enough to secure the North Sumatra airfields and have sufficient port facilities to maintain for an infinite period the maximum of defensive forces within the area.
