WO 203/4893: Operation 'Culverin' capture of North Sumatra: planning papers
01/01/1943 - 31/12/1943
Joint Planning Staff papers pertaining to Operation 'Culverin' capture of North Sumatra. Three possible courses of action was explored as a preliminary to an advance on Belawan by land, with a view to its capture before the monsoon. The S.W. monsoon produces a very heavy swell on the west coast of Sumatra and landing during this period will be an operational hazard. Approval from Chiefs of Staff was sought to accept the J.P.S. Paper no.93, as outlining the minimum resources required for an assault on North Sumatra in the Spring of 1944, in order to develop a heavy air offensive, employing heavy bombers.
