Letters, memoranda and minutes of meetings concerned with the preparation of a paper by the British Chiefs of Staff on the strategic importance of Singapore. One purpose is to provide a strategic background for any studies undertaken by East Asia. Documents include a memorandum by the Chiefs of Staff on threats to the security of Singapore and defence requirements,  a note by the Commissioner of Police of the Malayan Union on incidence of violent crime and the actions of ex-guerrillas and members of the Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army as potential saboteurs, minutes of a meeting of the Commanders-in-Chief Far East which discussed the strategic importance of Singapore  and allied papers.
