Officer Administrating the Government Mr. P.A.B. McKerron poses with the 2 finalist teams from the Malay Settlement Boys' Club (left of Mr McKerron) and the Katong Boys' Club in the McKerron Cup for inter-boys' club badminton. The Malay Settlement Boys' Club beat the Katong Boys' Club 4-1 at the Clerical Union Hall. The McKerron Cup was established by Mr McKerron in 1949 to encourage the game of badminton among boys' organisations. In 1952, Malaya successfully defended the Thomas Cup played in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.  The rise in popularity of the badminton game and its becoming a national sport can be attributed to Malaya winning the first Thomas Cup in 1948.  Although Singapore was not a part of Malaya, she provided a number of local players for the Malayan team, such as Wong Peng Soon  and Ong Poh Lim.
