PART OF A SERIES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING EAST CENTRAL, EASTERN COAST OF SINGAPORE
Aerial photo oriented with north on the right, showing the Ulu Bedok, Chai Chee and Kampong Kembangan areas. The dark coloured metaled road winding across the lower left is Upper Changi Road. Above the left part of the m-shape of the lower half of Upper Changi Road is a Chinese burial ground. Below the left side of the m-shape is a Muslim shrine or keramat, of an Indian holy man, Syed Mustaffa Alidros, who died in 1870. The track branching off downwards and to the right of the lower part of Upper Changi Road is Jalan Peng Ghee, and a short distance from its junction with Upper Changi Road it forms a Y-junction with Peng Ann Road, which snakes its way through the countryside up the right side of the photo. Around this junction was a vegetable market or chai chee in Hokkien, where the local farmers sold their produce, hence the name of the kampong there. In the middle to upper left of the photo are the streets and houses of Kampong Kembangan and Kampong Pachitan. The streets are named Jalan Lapang, Jalan Sentosa, Jalan Senang, Jalan Selamat, Jalan Sayang, Jalan Senyum, Jalan Kembangan, Lengkog Satu, Lengkog Dua, Lengkog Tiga. Jalan Senang leads to some large buildings which are a brick works.
