PART OF A SERIES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING EAST CENTRAL, EASTERN COAST OF SINGAPORE
Photo shows rural Toa Payoh. Running across the bottom right corner is the Whampoe or Balestier River crossed by 3 roads. From top to bottom they are Boon Teck Road, Jalan Rajah, and Tai Gin Lane. On the left below the cloud is a Chinese cemetery. The big rectangular complex of buildings in the top right corner is Siong Lim See Buddhist Temple and Monastery beside Kim Keat Road. From 1939, Venerable Pu Liang, the Abbbot of this temple, helped raise money for the China Relief Fund for war against Japan. The temple was also the training and staging ground for the Nanyang Volunteers, who drove trucks on the Burma Road to supply war materiel to China. For this, the Abbott and two of his disciples were executed by the Japanese during the Sook Ching operation in 1942.
