Aerial Photo
PART OF A SERIES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING EAST CENTRAL, EASTERN COAST OF SINGAPORE
Photo shows area between Thomson Road (running across frame from left to right), Balestier Road (running down right hand side of frame), and Moulmein Road (running down left hand side of frame). You can see Novena Church (below bend in Thomson Rd), Chancery Lane (above and opposite it), and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (at bottom of photo). Also a Chinese cemetery at Balestier rd. and a Jewish Cemetery with more closely spaced tombs. The Redemptorist order only purchased the grounds of Novena Church (Church of St Alphonsus) in 1947 and built the chapel (which became the church) in 1950. At the time the photograph was taken, the grounds as a property named Ben Nevis, was owned by the estate of Wee Kay Siang. The name of the Teochew Cemetery, which was owned by Ngee Ann Kongsi, was Kwong Eng Suah (or Guang En Shan).
