View of policemen, the one in the middle donning uniform of riot police, and British military personnel patrolling Chinatown where students and members of the Singapore Chinese Middle Schools Students' Union (SCMSSU) had barricaded themselves in a building. The group had earlier marched in from Chinese High School in Bukit Timah, one of two schools (the other being Chung Cheng High School) where some 4 000 students had stage a stay-in protest strike since 10 October against the government's decision to dissolve the SCMSSU as a communist-front organisation and the subsequent dismissal of teachers and students who had participated in subversive activities. The tension culminated into rioting outside Chinese High School on 25 October and at dawn the next day, the police cleared the school with tear-gas. The students then began to march into the city area.
