Interviewee’s father wanted him and his 8 siblings to have some background knowledge of Chinese culture. They were sent back to China for immersion programmes when he was 6-7 years old. Returned to Singapore in 1950 to begin his primary school education. Elaborated his primary and secondary school education in Singapore. Described recollections of his classmates. Named a few of them being well-known personalities in Singapore. Recalled his fond memories at Gan Eng Seng Secondary School. Joined Junior National Safety Frist Society as vice-president, described the various programmes organised. Attended political campaign rally at Hong Lim Green during his secondary school days.
His father operated a Jewellery Shop at South Bridge Road. Described the surrounding area of his father shop. How his father started as an apprentice at a jewellery shop. Described memories of his father’s shop and how they celebrated Chinese New Year then.
Described the memories of his father’s involvement as Chairman in the Clan Association and in the jewellery arena. Recalled memories of his father’s teaching on table mannerism, assisting in his business and having outings together.
Described how his father learned many things even he did not receive much education. Recounted the how values influenced by his parents were being passed down to their children. For example, the values in helping needy people and putting others first before selves. Elaborated on his or her mother was a caring, loving and well-educated woman with good venture. Memories of how his mother told moral stories from China and recited Tang Poem with her children. Recounted on having a very happy memories of childhood. Learning different dialects by listening to stories in dialects. How he experienced a closely-knit-family. Described his father’s snuffing habits. Both parents were well -respected by their peers and how they influenced their children to contribute to society.

Shared his memories of secondary schooldays. They went to Hong Lim Park to listen to our founding father, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s rally. His impression of Mr Lee Kuan Yew during that time. He commented why Mr Lee Kwan Yew was popular.
Recalled the fun and interesting happenings being the first batch of pre-university students at Gan Eng Seng Secondary School. Playing netball for the first time. Went to the University of Singapore, and his decision in taking up the Dentistry course. Described his fun experience as freshman being ragged by the seniors. Started fund raising during Gan Eng Seng Sec School. Shared his experience in fund raising for the Spastic Children Association. Shared on how charities work were carried out by his parents and friends then. Eventually how the Thye Hua Kwan Charities registered as a society was established in 1978. Shared the full name of the registered society in Chinese (潮安 西湖 太和观 纯德社 ), the origin meaning of the name and its function. How it was set up in the temple to serve the people in China more than 100 years ago.
Shared some of the ad hoc charity works being carried out by Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THKMS) offering scholarships and donations to the needy. Was given a residential Home by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) to manage at Jalan Eunos, with 22 children from different culture background came in to the Home on 1 June 1987. Lessons learned from managing these children. How they imparted values to them and mould them to be a better person.

Pioneered for Government’s Senior Activity Centre (SAC). Described the scope of charity work and out of every 3 pioneer’s SAC, Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THKMS) was given two Centres to manage. Shared in details the functions and the activities of SAC. Described how the Centre staff interacts and assists the seniors staying around that area near the centre. Recalled how they celebrated an old lady’s 100 year old birthday. Described how the Centre works with Housing Development Board (HDB) on the Alarm Alert System.
Shared on the staffing condition at different Centres. Challenges faced by the Centres and how they recruit volunteers.
Described in details the ‘Meals-on-Wheels” programme. How the THKMS provides that service through the recommendation of “The Agency for the Integrated Care” (AIC) to the seniors. How THKMS manages to prepare and deliver more than 400,000 packs of meals to 700 seniors every day with two meals a day.
Described what are Home Interim Care Service, its functions and its services and the staffing set up.
