Synopsis

His personal background and was born at Meyer Mansion workers quarters opposite Bata Factory. Parents Ashik Bin Bakar came from Semarang Indonesia and Mother Jauhara Bte Abdul from Surabaya. His mother came to Singapore with first husband. Her second marriage with En Ashik after the passing of her first husband. They came to Singapore to find employment. Description of his father first job at Meyer Mansion. He lived in harmony with steps siblings. Details description of his father 2nd job as Lift Attendant and Cleaner at Meyer Mansion. Small salary (estimated $200 monthly) but enough to support the entire family. Supplement income came from teaching Al Quran. Description of Meyer Mansion building. Workers quarters living areas were spaces and workers and children lived quite comfortably.   Description of life style and jobs at Meyer Mansion. Synopsis

His funny experience using common toilet at Meyer Mansion quarters and games played at the corridor. Surrounding Meyer Mansion, opposite Bata factory and many hawkers along Bata factory. Children would collect left over rubber and sold to cobbler. In front Meyer Mansion was Union Jack for British soldiers, next to Union Jack was Capitol theatre. St Cathedral and Fire Brigade (Red building). Ford Canning. Meyer Mansion was demolished and Peninsula Plaza stood on it. Day time was very busy and very lively. Woman folks exchanges dishes. Night was quiet but filled with children studying Quran. Mansion Residents always kept to themselves. Day time Bata was busy and people did shopping at High Streets but at night surrounding Mansion was very quiet except at Capitol theatre. Capitol Theatre was the place for young. He enjoyed watching morning shows on Sunday. Capitol would be very lively during weekend. More on Bata factory, many Malay workers worked there. He explained why Meyer Mansion was demolished. He felt sad to leave Meyer Mansion for Pondok at Perak Road.

His father was recommended to work as Gardener at American Club. His salary was about $100. He described his upbringing at town area (Meyer Mansion). The nearest Malay community was a group of Malays who lived at High Street. He played, marble, Sepak Takraw, hide and seek, soccer and rounders’ at St Andrew Cathedral field or Padang with boys of other races. Watched matches at Padang. Synopsis

Children at Meyer Mansion were very fond of David Marshall. Children always received chocolate from David Marshall. He was very loving, friendly and firm. Mohd Ashik went picnic with David Marshall at his holiday bungalow at Tanah Merah. He described how children were transported to David Marshall bungalow. He described how David Marshal was concerned about his safety.  Informed his father when he saw him playing at Kallang River and Cathay Cinema. David Marshal could speak Malay well. He had a brother who was a Doctor and a sister named Rosy who was involved with Henderson group looking after children welfare. David Marshal lived with his wife but not as friendly as he is. Mohd Ashik described his personal experience during riots along Kallang Road. He was walking back home through Kampong Soopo when he saw a Federal Unit officer being chased by a group of Malays. He was told the fight already started at Padang. He explained how he helped Jamiyah collecting donation during Prophet Muhammad birthday celebration. When he was at Meyer Mansion he saw many people running for safety and his father closed the main gate. He heard many serious incidents happened around Geylang areas, Relationship of multi-racial workers at Meyer Mansion quarters were not affected. He was told the riot started by gangsters and it was a planned move. He described situation during curfew.

Synopsis

He started Primary education in 1963 at Tanglin Tinggi Malay Primary School. Description of Tanglin school, uniforms, students, transportation to school. Used stone slab to write from primary 1 to primary 5. He was overjoyed to receive proper writing books. Description of teaching staff and style of teachings. Subjects thought and punishment method out to naughty children. Extended to Kota Raja Malay School. Description of Kota Raja School. Uniform and school environment. Kota Raja became centre of Trainee Teachers. Descriptions of teaching staff and Mr Sidek Saniff (Former Minister of State –Education) teaching style. Received better results and continue to Kallang Malay Secondary School. New experience at Secondary School and description of the school. Moved to Tun Seri Lanang (TSL). A mixed school of Male and Female students. His initial experience studying with female students. It was a good motivation of having female students and pushed him to study harder.
