Synopsis

Interviewee was born in Houston, Texas to a musical and religious family.  He started learning piano at 3 years old where his mother was his first teacher.  Houston had a vibrant culture scene.  He wrote the school song for his elementary school.  Music making continued in junior high school, where he was in the school orchestra.   He noticed the diverse background of the students at the high school for performing arts.  He also saw the cracks in the society.  He studied music at university and was also interested in  other field of studies, mentioning the need of having “connections”.

Synopsis

Interviewee talked about his appointment as Singapore Symphony Orchestra  (SSO) Composer-in-Residence circa 2003/04.  He wrote Symphony No 1 which consisted of 5 movements during the residency.  He was commissioned by The Esplanade to write a piece “Kong” at the 2004 Huayi Festival, performed by the T’ang and Huqin Quartet.  He also wrote a concerto for guzheng and orchestra.  He talked about the formation of OperaViva, the founding members, the inaugural concert and the production Fences.  Interviewee wanted to cast an African-American for an Asian role.

Synopsis

Singapore was home to interviewee.  While it was not ideal for the arts, it allowed him to stand back and do his own work.  He liked gardening and chilled out during his free time.  Interviewee was a permanent resident at time of recording.  Tax issues in the United States prevented him from applying for Singapore citizenship.  He gave his views on the comments on immigrants in Singapore.  His advice to new immigrants in Singapore.  He gave his concluding remarks.
