Synopsis

Interviewee was born 1940 in Singapore and stayed at Tank Road terrace house. Childhood was spent around the Fort Canning Hill area. His uncle worked at Nan Qiao Film Company and founder of Chin Kang Huay Kuan. His father delivered film reels to the cinemas. His uncle was a cultured person, which influenced him in the arts. He studied at Tao Nan School. He was asked by his teacher to sing Mai Bao Ge (selling newspapers song) on stage [he sang a verse]. His family moved to Jalan Eunos when Tank Road had to be widened. He studied at Chung Cheng High School.


苏世雄(简称苏)1940 年出生于新加坡。小时住在Tank Road排屋。童年在福康宁公园嬉戏度过。伯父苏秋生开创南桥影业公司,也是晋江会馆创办人。父亲是电影胶片传递员。伯父是文人,苏受其艺术影响。他在道南学校就读,被老师叫上台唱“卖报歌”(苏唱了一段)。由于Tank Road 需扩建,他们搬家至Jalan Eunos.  中学就读中正中学。

Synopsis

At Chung Cheng High School, interviewee was in the gymnastic team, which would prove beneficial in his dancing later. School activities such as picnic also introduced dance to him. He mentioned the student movement and the period they stayed in the school compound. The students would organize farewell function, and interviewee choreographer an Indonesian coconut dance for the event. Interviewee talked about Chung Cheng High School, the art, the flood. He joined the Teachers’ Training College (TTC) after graduating from Chung Cheng High School.


在中正中学,苏参加了健身操。这对以后的舞蹈活动有帮助。学校的野餐社交活动也让他接触舞蹈。苏谈到当时的学潮和集体生活。学生有主办叙别会,苏当时为晚会编了印尼椰子舞。苏谈对中正中学的印象- 绘画,校舍淹水等。毕业后,苏进入师资训练学院。

Synopsis

Interviewee got into contact with dance at Tao Nan School Alumni Association. In 1962, he danced in Arts Theatre of Singapore production “Xi Ju Wu Dao Wan Hui”, in an item of Xinjiang Plate dance (choreographed by Mdm Liao Chun Hui). To strengthen his technique, interviewee took ballet lessons first at Singaprore Ballet Academy, then at the Singapore Arts School (rough translation) established by Mdm Goh Lay Kuan. In 1964, interviewee danced in the pas de deux in Second Act of Swan Lake, as part of Malaya Shu Ju Chang (rough translation: Malaya Arts Theatre) production. Interviewee talked about the company and the choreographer Liao Chun Hui. Interviewee elaborated on how he made the prop of big-headed dolls.


苏先生在道南学校校友会接触舞蹈。第一支学的是蒙古舞。1962年参加新加坡艺术剧场“戏剧舞蹈晚会”。他非常投入跳新疆盘子舞(廖春晖女士编)。由于要有系统的舞蹈基础,苏先在新加坡芭蕾舞学院,后在吴丽娟的新加坡艺术学院接受芭蕾舞训练。1964年参与马来亚艺术剧院“十二花采之夜”演出,跳了天鹅湖第二幕双人舞。苏叙述马来亚艺术剧院及廖春晖。廖女士对马来舞贡献大。苏畅谈“大头娃娃”的道具制作及演出。

Synopsis

Interviewee explained the making and performance of the peacock dance and straw hat dance. He elaborated on how Liao Chun Hui  taught dance. The Malaya Shu Ju Chang was active for a few years. In 1970, at the People’s Association Culture Troupe performance, he did an item on Mongolian chopstick dance. The guest choreographer was Ms Jiang Ming Zhu. Interviewee talked about the 60s dance scene, where the Ministry of Culture organized regular outdoor performances, the cinemas screening dance movies, and Mdm Lee Shu Fen holding dance classes at Ministry of Education (MOE).


苏解释“孔雀舞” 及“草笠舞”的道具制作及演出。他也述说廖春晖教舞情况。马来亚艺术剧院只活跃了几年。1970 年他在人民协会文工团跳了客卿老师江明珠的蒙古筷子舞。苏谈了60年代的舞蹈活动,如文化部定期举办露天艺术活动,电影院播放舞蹈电影,李淑芬在教育部开办舞蹈课程等。

Synopsis

Interviewee underwent training at the Teachers’ Training College (TTC) to be a teacher. He was posted to Xin Sheng Primary School, a village school. His principal asked him to enter a team for the Singapore Youth Festival dance competition. Interviewee talked about Yun Pai Dance (about clouds) and the making of the props, which won the Distinction Award. Two years later, an all-girl “Duan Long”  also received good response. He gave his thoughts on teaching in village school. He was transferred to Mee Toh School, and was involved in school’s dance events. His last posting was to Maha Badhi School till his retirement. During his time there, the school participated in the National Day Parade in the item “It’s a small world”. He was the stage manager for the Singapore Youth Festival dance competition. He attended the dance classes conducted by Mr Zheng Shu Zheng organized by the National Theatre Trust.


从中正中学毕业后,苏进入师资训练学院受训。他被排入乡村学校新声小学。他被校长委任率队参加青年节舞蹈比赛。苏畅谈“云牌舞”的编舞及道具制作。“云牌舞”得了优等奖。两年后,由女生跳的“段龙”也得到良好反应。他谈了教乡村学校的感想。苏过后转到弥陀学校,也协助校内的舞蹈活动。他最后加入菩提学校至退休,期间学校参加1991年国庆日表演“小小世界”.他也是1995年青年节舞蹈比赛的舞台监督。他于1979年参加国家剧场信托委员会主办,由郑书正开办的华族舞蹈班。

Synopsis

Zheng Shu Zheng provided formal Chinese dance training to the students. There was a public performance after the course. When Zheng left Singapore, the National Theatre Trust gathered the students to form the National (Theatre) Chinese Dance Troupe, led by Mdm Liao Li Li. The troupe presented “Dance of the Orient” from 1982 onwards. With National Theatre Trust being subsumed under National Arts Council, the dance troupe was dissolved and the members decided to form Theatre Arts Troupe. Interviewee talked about the first performance of the new company, and a few other projects. Theatre Arts Troupe disbanded in 2013. Interview gave his concluding remarks, which included more than 40 years of dancing.


郑书正为学员提供正统的华族舞蹈训练。在课程结束后,学员也呈现一个演出汇报。郑书正回国后,国家剧场信托委员会把这些学员组成国家(剧场)华族舞蹈团,由廖丽丽指导。1982年,舞团呈现“东方舞集”。由于国家剧场信托委员会归纳于国家艺术理事会,国家剧场华族舞蹈团解散,前成员成立剧场艺术团。苏谈1993年的第一个演出及几个其他节目。剧场艺术团于2013年结束。苏畅谈个人感受,以及40多年的舞蹈生涯。
