Subjects studied in Yock Eng High School. Civics lessons in primary schools. On learning History, Geography and Biology. How students were seated in the classroom according to gender. Memories of teachers and Art lessons. Memory of a History teacher who had a dialect accent while using Guoyu (Mandarin) in teaching. Teachers taught English using Guoyu (Mandarin). Memory of the Discipline Master. Marks would be deducted from students if they committed offences. Recalled the incident when she and her friends were summoned to his office as they were late for school. They were late because they sent a classmate off to China at Clifford Pier. Recalled a police search in her classroom in Yock Eng High School for propaganda materials. Memories of physical education lessons and uniforms. The school choir in Yock Eng High.

Synopsis
Her dialect group. Memories of living in the Bendemeer area. Extra-curricular activities (ECA) in Yock Eng High. Description of the incident where she and her classmates in Yock Eng High were persuaded to participate in a student sit-in at Chung Cheng High (Goodman Road). She was led in to classrooms where she talked and played games with other students. She was given porridge and coffee. Students were not allowed to leave the classrooms. She slept overnight in the classroom. Her feelings of not being allowed to return home. Some students cried. Students were not allowed to make phone calls and parents were not allowed to see their children. There were “guards” outside the classrooms. Reasons for the sit-in – according to the organisers. The police came in the next morning and used water cannons against the students. The situation was chaotic. She dashed out of the school and was received by her mother. Memories of basketball activities in Yock Eng High. She completed three years of secondary school education in Yock Eng High and enrolled in Chung Cheng High but only completed the first year. Memories of Chung Cheng High: sitting arrangement in the classroom, interaction with male students and the lake at Chung Cheng.

Synopsis
Went to Chinatown with her colleagues for supper after work. Working hours of the “morning/afternoon shift”, which was mainly in-charge of the Fukan (副刊)section. Relationship between colleagues in different sections in Nanyang Siang Pau. Operation of the proof-reading department: assigning proof-readers, number of proof-readers, ratio of males to females, superiors. Proof-reading work: common mistakes, checking the reliability of news articles provided by the reporter, used a Chinese brush that dipped in red ink to highlight characters that were amended. The reporters’ handwritten articles for the day would be bundled up and stored away. Repeated rounds of proof-reading. Typesetting work: description of and mistakes made, Interaction of typesetters with reporters and editors. Relationship between typesetting and advertisements. How to handle emergency news. A colleague would stay back after office hour to proof-read emergency news.

Synopsis
Layout of the proof-reading department in the Nanyang Siang Pau office building at Robinson Road. The editorial and translation departments were in other offices on the same level. Description of dinner provided by the company for night shift staff and supper for proof-readers. Memories of her colleagues in the proof-reading department. Her husband (eventual) Phua Sin Ping was in the same department. Reason for arranging females to take the “morning/afternoon shift”. Staff in Nanyang Siang Pau usually stayed in their jobs for a long time. Memories of Company events such as year-end banquet at “Da Tong”(大同酒家)restaurant. Memories of changes in the work week, rest days, vacation leave. Little impacts on work on her social life as she looked forward to work. Reason why she stayed on as a proof-reader. Colleagues would not reveal content of the day’s paper to external parties. She joined Nanfang Wanbao(南方晚报)in 1960 as a proof-reader.
