Synopsis

Parent’s and grandparent’s background. Paternal grandparents were from Malaysia. Maternal grandmother came to Singapore by accident. Mother got married at 15. Mother was pregnant when the Japanese came. Interviewee’s sister died during the war and mother subsequently gave birth to another daughter. Interviewee was born in 1940. Sister was born in 1943. One of interviewee’s uncle was attacked by a tiger in Sarawak. Interviewee’s family lived near Nan yang Technological University for a while. How father was punished by Japanese.   Described house family bought without inspection in Paya Lebar. Why family reared chickens besides pigs. Family also had pigeons and ducks. Interviewee’s brother died in an accident. Interviewee used to cook for the pigs. Interviewee also did the family washings. Coconut husks were used to fire the stove. Mother did not bother about the children’s school work. Father felt that education is not important for girls.

Synopsis

She lived  in a Hokkien kampong in Haji Kalim. Interviewee’s family prevented to be Hokkiens so that neigbours could accept them. The original Malay landlord was subsequently replaced by a Hokkien. Relationships amongst the villagers. Occupations of villagers. Kept cats at home to keep centipedes away. Toilet outside home.  Home remedies to heal wounds, toe swells , bleeding, sore throat, centipede bites. Young banana flower boiled with sugar for good complexion. Herbs for cholesterol, piles. Her views on life in a kampong. Brief comment on her life in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat. .
