Synopsis

Interviewee talked about Mdm Som Said, whom he assisted in setting up a children’s dance group. Som Said’s proposal to set up a professional dance company led to tensions between her and Mr Nongchik. Highlighted that Nongchik used his personal savings to fund the productions. At one Annual General Meeting, Nongchik was not selected as Exco member. Later the Sriwana members reconciled with Nongchik. Relationship between him and Sriwana became better and interviewee choreographed a dance piece for the company in 2003/4. Ellaborated on Sriwana. How he split his time between National Dance Company, People’s Association Dance Company and Sriwana. Talked briefly about his job at CISCO. Compared training environment in Sriwana and in People’s Association (PA). He listed teachers whom he had trained under at PA and National Dance Company. His audition for the National Dance Company. At PA, he learnt to mix with other dances and races. In 1984, he was requested by Nongchik to assist him at PA Malay Dance group.

Synopsis

Interviewee shared his experience teaching in NUS Malay Dance Group. Mentioned an incident regarding a production Neraca where there were complaints about using white cloth to cover the dancers’ head. Interviewee submitted a dance proposal to National Arts Council in 2001 and it was accepted. His music project featuring traditional and contemporary musicians, with music arranged by Iskandar Ismail, was accepted and staged by Esplanade in 2002. In 2002, interviewee was approached by Dr Yacob Ibranhim to conceptualise a show featuring Malay talents from the Community Centres. Interviewee explained how the name of the show Genta Rasa came about. Talked about the production.
