Synopsis

Born 1932 in Hong Kong, came to Singapore with parents at age of two. Parents were rattan workers. Life during Japanese Occupation was tough. Father started family rattan business after Japanese Occupation. Started to work in father rattan shop when he was about sixteen. How to classify rattan into various sizes and quality. Processes and treatment of rattan before making them to rattan skin. Described La Teng (拉藤 making the rattan skin).  Started to use machine in 1960s. Named big companies that exported rattan.  Describe the sizes of rattan using Manau (青藤) rattan as example.  Talked about Shui Teng 水藤.  Purchased rattan through big companies.

Synopsis

Rattan business was most prosperous in 1970s. Decided to discontinue his family business in 1970 in making rattan products as the rental was increasingly high. Employed by big rattan company, main duty was to classify rattan into different quality and sizes. Felt that rattan business was a tough job. Retired in 1980s. Joined Rattan Industry Association in 1970s. Why he joined. Activities of the Association. Benefits that members had. Received 20-year long service award from the Association in 1999. Talked about the Association’s ancestral praying. The Association took over the remains of the members and relocated them when government acquired the land of Peck San Theng 碧山亭. The dissolved process of the Association. How he felt about it. How he felt about how the committee of the Association handled the sale of the Association’s premises.
