Synopsis
*Family background, recall hiding during Japanese Occupation. Father and his uncle were in rattan business. Purchased rattan from Indonesia, classified into various types. Described scraping of rattan node. How they used sand to wash the rattan. Rattan to be fumigated with sulfur for one night, after that to be sun. How to peel the skin of the rattan. How the remaining ‘core’ was used. Rattan skins were mainly for export to European countries. Cantonese, education background. Worked in father’s rattan factory since young.

Synopsis
Depended on exporters to export their rattan. Not a problem to obtain raw materials in 1950s and 1960s. Changes in rattan business over the years. Why clients chose to purchase from Singapore although there were other countries able to supply rattan. Why interviewee ceased his business. Joined Rattan and Cane Merchants, Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Teng Shang Gong Hui 藤商公会) in 1976 when his father passed away. The Association’s members used to monopolize the trading of rattan. Non-members were not allowed to purchase rattan from commission agent (Jiu Ba Hang九八行). In rattan business, little collaboration among the businessmen. Each company would have their own exporter. How the Association was dissolved.
