Synopsis

*Mrs Chung, born 1951 in Hong Kong. Was a housewife, not prepared for migration. How her husband discussed about migrating to Singapore with her. Reasons to migrate to Singapore. Her experiences in staying in Taiwan for two years, felt that it was a place that they could integrate to the society faster compared to Singapore.  Migration wave in Hong Kong when they moved to Singapore, Singapore was not the most popular choice then. Why Singapore was good choice to them. Officer of Immigrations & Checkpoint Authority of Singapore (ICA) helped them to settle down in Singapore. Eexperience in renting flat from HDB. Impression of officer of ICA and how the officer helped them in locating accommodation and school for their children. Rented flat in Redhill View, neighbours were all immigrants from Hong Kong.

Synopsis

Compare accommodation that they rent in Redhill View and the place they stayed in Hong Kong. Elaborate on why she felt that quality of life had been downgraded when she moved to Singapore. Cost of living in Singapore was higher.  Felt that Singaporean’s demand for quality of living was lower then. Mixed around with other Hong Kong immigrates who lived nearby. Gatherings they had, things that they talked about. Describe the flat at Redhill View, unclean spirit that they heard and saw. Health of family members were bad, daughter was hospitalised, she went for operation. Help they received from doctor. Regretted that she had moved to Singapore, but no way to turn back.

Synopsis

Husband went back to Hong Kong a year later, how she and children stayed in Singapore. Attention was devoted to educating the children and took care of her daughter who was a diabetic. Joined Diabetic Society of Singapore, felt Singapore medical system was good. Daughter felt inferior as she was a diabetic. Felt she was incapable to discipline the children without her husband around especially when daughter was at her rebellious teenage period. Reasons for her to let her husband worked in Hong Kong. Eldest son could adapt well in Singapore. Differences between her two sons. Research done on children’s education in Singapore, what they expected their children to achieve. Decided to let younger son to go to Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and ITE was indeed better for him. Hong Kong technical education could not provide better future for his younger son compared to Singapore ITE.

Synopsis

Eldest son’s ‘O’ level examination results was good, except for English Language. Felt chances to go to university in Singapore were slim. How Mr Chung discussed with him and finally decided to send him to U.S. for study. Daughter’s PSLE result was good. Her school provided sufficient information for the family to choose suitable secondary school for her. The chance of learning bad things in Singapore was slim. Discussed with daughter and let her continued to study in polytechnic. How they decided on the education path for their children. Communications between them and their children. Compare the working attitudes between Singapore and Hong Kong government officers. Mrs Chung felt that Singaporeans were curious when they met immigrants.

Not worried for his children as they would grow up in Singapore and be able to adopt. Recall experiences in renting accommodation in Singapore. Bought HDB flat when son went through National Service and became Singapore Citizen. How they decided to buy the flat at Tampines.

Surprised to know many Cantonese opera lovers in Singapore were non-Cantonese. Changes in Cantonese opera activities in Singapore over the years. Her urge for improvement in opera. How she felt about spending money in practising Cantonese opera. Non-profit organisations that promote Cantonese opera.

Synopsis

Mrs Chung talks about monetary investment in practicing Cantonese opera. Attended courses to learn Cantonese opera make-up. Mr Chung was supportive of his wife to be involved in Cantonese opera. He learnt to play Cantonese opera drum to develop common interest with his wife. Felt that his wife loved Cantonese opera because she was homesick. Mrs Chung felt that Cantonese opera was active in Singapore and this was affected by the opera masters who taught the opera in Singapore. Standard of Cantonese opera in Singapore had risen over the years. Went to U.S. to stay with eldest son for two years when Mr Chung left his work in Hong Kong. Mr Chung’s efforts in getting a job in U.S., doing direct sales of Toyota cars. Challenges in handling colleague and clients in new environment. Not successful for first try, subsequently improved.
