Synopsis
*Born 1942. Father was a fruit merchant and interested in art and literature. Started photography at 12 years old with a box camera. Father objected to his hobby but brother persuaded his father to be more supportive. Father gave him $500 to buy a Rolleiflex camera. Set up his own dark room. Studied at Tuan Mong High School. Sunday photo shoot outings with the Photographic Society of Singapore (PSS) at locations such as Mata Ikan (Changi) and Merdeka Bridge. Spoke on early activities of PSS / Singapore Camera Club, and the scene during that period. Held his first photographic exhibition at Tuan Mong High School. While father wanted him to be a doctor, he wanted to study photography.
Worked as a Field Officer for 6 months at Ministry of Culture. Later he joined as a medical photographer with the Department of Medicine and Paediatrics at the University of Singapore. From 1962 to 1997 his colour transparencies were accepted 6,005 times in 2,439 international salons. He won 1,079 awards including 34 Photographic Society of America (PSA) Gold Medals for “Best Slide Of the Show”, 8 FIAP Gold Medals and 241 other medals. From 1969 -1988 he was ranked the world’s top 10 pictorial colour slide exhibitors. Also mentioned other honours.

Synopsis
*Mr Tan continued his discussion on his move to digital photography. Spoke on early and established photographers Datuk Loke Wan Tho and Mr Chua Soo Bin. A few of the established photographers went on the trip to China in 1978. Relating an event concerning Mr Yip Cheong Fun. Comments on Mr Foo Tee Jun, another established photographer.
Mr Tan talked on his job as a medical photographer. His job title was Technical Support Officer with the Department of Medicine and Paediatrics. Topics included set-up and equipment at that time, training and experience, staff strength now and then.
