Synopsis
Family background. Various jobs interviewee had in the UK before joining the Air Force as a wireless fitter. Interviewee had a year’s training in UK. He was working in the Radio Engineering Unit, followed by the air base before going to Egypt, Libya, Cyprus and other countries from 1951-53. Interviewee was posted to Singapore in 1957. He was given 6 month’s notice before his trip here. Interviewee read about the fall of Singapore before his arrival here. His first impression of Singapore. Why interviewee lived outside the camp. Interviewee was 26 years old and married when he came to Singapore. Lived in Jalan Kayu. Mentioned The Cathay and the Britannica Club. Rubber trees within the Seletar Camp. Seletar Camp had open house for the public. There were two churches within the camp compound. Cinema. Their attire in Singapore. Amy Police kept them from Bugis Street. Only senior officers went to Raffles Hotel. Interviewee’s job responsibilities in the camp. Little mixing with the locals. Recounted his experience of going to his servant’s house for Chinese New Year celebration. Interviewee spent 2 years and 6 months in Singapore. His feelings about going home to UK. Jalan Kayu market. Social activities within the camp. They were trained in riots control. Recounted incident where they heard siren looking for Chin Peng. The Cathay was where they went for entertainment. Botanical garden. Found his stay in Singapore educational. He never felt threatened in Singapore though they never mix with the locals. Interviewee’s first trip back to Singapore in 2001. His impression of Singapore River. He left for UK in 1959. Interviewee was made redundant in 1977 but he joined UK civil service in 1979. His memory of Tiger Balm Garden. Why he likes Tiger Balm Garden.
