Synopsis
*Born 1932. Family background. Came to Malaya due to war in Hainan Island, China. Described the journey to Nanyang. Studied primary school in Kulai, Malaya. How he started painting. Hometown was taken over by Japanese for its mine during Japanese Occupation. How his family ran coffee-shop during Japanese Occupation. Started with water-colour painting. His paintings were hung in family’s coffee-shop, some were sold. Described first painting he sold in 1940s. Came to Singapore to look for professional Art school. Self-learn photography. Worked part-time in photo studio in Singapore to support his studies in Nanyang Academy of Arts 南洋美专.

*His training in Nanayng Academy of Arts 南洋美专in early 1950s on charcoal drawing, water-colour and oil painting. His teachers. Training in art theory. Things he learnt from the Academy. Cited examples of things he painted. Compare the changes in courses offered by the Academy in 1950s and 2000s. Foundation he learnt from the Academy. Felt lost when he graduated from the Academy, could not depend on selling his painting to earn for a living. Decided to further his studies, why he chose to go to China. Surrendered his Singapore Identity in order to go to China. Studies in Beijing Tuition School for Overseas Chinese北京华侨补校 then went through examination to get into Beijing Central Technical Art College北京中央工艺美术学院 (now known as The Academy of Arts & Design Tsinghua University 清华大学美术学院). Described training he had in the Academy. Different type of stretching 素描 training he had compared to Nanayng Academy of Arts 南洋美专. How his studies in Ceramics Department affected his art works in future.
