Synopsis
*Early interest in music. Trained by Miss Lydia Ng from Toa Payoh Methodist Church. No difficulties playing the piano. Influenced by Mr Samuel Leong at Anglo-Chinese School. Dividing his time between his studies and music as a student. Musicians he liked. Parents were very supportive of his interest in music. First public performances in Singapore. Played the piano at church from age 12. Taught music after finishing his ‘A’-Levels at Swiss Cottage Secondary School. Wanted to learn more about Performance after obtaining diplomas from England. Examinations and lessons for the diploma courses. Went to a pre-university centre in order to play more music. No position available in the Music and Dance Company (MDC) during National Service. Decision to take up Music at the University of Western Australia (UWA). Why he picked UWA and not other institutions to learn music. How he supported himself financially at UWA.
Taught music in Perth. Daily activities as a student at UWA. Music curriculum at UWA. Graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Piano Performance) (Honours) in 1994 and then Masters in Music (Performance) in 1996. Learning the pianoforte and assembling the instrument in Perth with a friend. Impressions of the staff and students of the UWA School of Music. Decision not to return to Singapore. What he would have done in Singapore if he had returned home. Travelling to play in concerts. Established the Bridge Christian Music Mission in Perth. Also started a mobile music school. Member of the Australian Music Examinations Board. Recalled an experience with a British examiner. His work in the Perth Christian Chinese Mission and Kingsway Methodist Church. Role in the church choir. Enjoyed working with church music. Came from a staunch Christian family. Happy with his accomplishments. Only wish was that he had an earlier start in classical music. Impression that Singaporeans did not appreciate classical music. Other musical instruments he could play. Release of albums of religious music in Perth.
