Synopsis

Roles as Deputy Chairman for SISIR (Singapore Institute of Standards) and Deputy Chairman SMA (Singapore Manufacturers Association). Descriptions of work done for a research undertaken at University of Singapore. Became Singapore’s first Rhodes Scholar and lectured at the University of Singapore Chemistry Department.

Family and personal background. Recollections of student days at Oxford. Views on later batch of students and those who were Rhodes Scholars. Represented Singapore in the water polo team in the S.E.A and Asian Games.

Beginnings of entry into politics; approached by Dr Phay Seng Whatt to stand for 1972 by-election in River Valley constituency. Recollections of election campaign. Involvements as newly elected MP. Descriptions of circumstances leading to appointment as Senior Minister of State for National Development and Finance in 1974. Recount of swearing-in ceremony at the Istana.

Synopsis

Involvements as Senior Minister for Ministry of National Development (MND) and Chairman of URA. Became Executive Chairman of Sports Council and worked with Lau Teng Chuan and Tan Eng Yoon to promote sports management and culture.

Beginnings of Singapore Indoor Stadium. Thoughts on the qualities of a good minister. Involvements as Minister for MND, worked with Permanent Secretary Cheng Tong Fatt. Became a member of CEC (Central Executive Committee) and Secretary, with Mr Ong Pang Boon as Chairman in the 1979 Election Committee.

Recollections of meeting the then PM Lee Kuan Yew over the complaints on car parking and tenders for some shops. Decision to leave politics. Recounts of helping Mr Goh Chok Tong and Ngiam Tong Dow to set up the Trade Development Board (TDB).
