Synopsis
Details of early life. Youngest of 13 siblings. Recollections of primary and secondary school days. Oldest brother encouraged him to play the guitar. Was not interested till he saw The Shadows play. Took guitar lessons from Harry Martinez, a popular teacher in the 1960s. How Silver Strings was formed. Practised at Wilfred house and later Toby’s house, both from rich families. Was initially an instrumental band, had vocalist later. The different vocalists that joined the band - Veronica Young, Andy Young, Shirley Nair and the two brothers from Malaysia (Mike and Herb). Their early gigs and audience response to their music. Signed with Philips in 1965 and released their first single. Their tour in Malaysia and the good old days in Kuching. Had a short stint playing at Adelphi Hotel.

Introduction of Fuzz Box. Their second singles album featuring Mike and Herb and Shirley Nair. Played in the format 4 plus 2 plus 1. Compared Silver Strings with The Quests. “Chap Goh Mei” 1965, played at opening night when Rolling Stones was in Singapore. Extra income received from ‘back track’ recordings done for Chinese artistes and also a movie track for a Malay movie. His opinion on Chinese bands. Mid-1970s, nightly performance at Serene House (GI Club), was the start of them turning professional. Why Shirley Nair and the brothers Mike and Herb left. Paul Cheong, then a student joined them followed by Anita Sarawak. Enjoyed their gigs at Serene House. Had appreciative crowd. Described live shows at Serene House. About the Ortegas. First band in Singapore to include horns in their repertoire.

Impression of band, D'Starlights. Expansion of band to include horns. 1969, played professionally at Hotel Malaysia (former Marco Polo Hotel). Exposed to different music as had to play at three different locations that had different patrons. Felt proud he was the only musician who had central provident fund contributions at that time. Different amplifiers the band used which contributed to their popularity. Incident concerning Paul Cheong. Played at Hotel Showboat in Hong Kong. Recollection of his time in Hong Kong and how he met Francis Yip then 17/18 years old.
January 1971, last gig in Hong Kong as Silver Strings. About their six-piece line-up. Why stay in Hong Kong was shortened. Returned to Singapore and teamed up with Michael Tan of 10th Storey, a management agency. Getting the first contract for their first client, a band from Indonesia called Clique Fantastique. How he met Pakistani band, Talisman in Karachi and got them contract in Singapore. Groups he formed and promoted - Nedd Ludd and T-Sets.
