Synopsis

*Interviewee started to play badminton in 1920s. Talked about history of badminton, it started as a game and not sport. Development of badminton in Western countries. Badminton was brought to Singapore by colonial officers, became popular soon. More Westerners and Eurasians were involved in early stage. Badminton was first played indoor in Singapore. Singapore Chinese took up badminton as it was a low cost and easy to play game. Chinese played badminton outdoor, mostly in courtyard. Badminton became popular in Singapore since mid 1920s. Various badminton associations were formed. Famous badminton players in 1920s. Badminton was played mostly by civil servants. Chinese in Singapore started to play in mid 1930s. How Chinese took up the game. Interviewee started to play badminton since childhood. Family let Marigold Badminton Party used their empty space for training. Interviewee joined the Party when he came back to Singapore from Shantou, China.

*Left Mayflower Badminton Party due to dishearten incident occurred during competition in 1939. Never cooperate with Seah Eng Hee anymore since then. Still involved in Marigold Badminton Party. Fund raising competition for China for Second Sino-Japanese War. Funds were handled by Tong Teck Books & Newspaper Association 同德书报社. Cost of playing badminton during pre-war period. Why he used cheap racket which was made of wood with loose net. Plaited the net of the racket by himself to suit his needs.

Compared rackets made in Europe and China. How he selected racket. How he adjusted the tension of the net of his racket to suit his needs. No standard quality for racket at that time, selected racket by his feel. Elaborated on how posture and concentration were important when playing badminton. Various parts of racket such as handle, net which would affect the player. Player who focused on defence like net that was tight. How interviewee mended net with broken thread. Elaborate on the characteristics of different kind of threads.
