Synopsis
Born in Singapore; father came from Pontianak, Indonesia; mother Malay- Singaporean. Parents were Bangsawan artists, father painter and played saxophone, mother famous prima donna. Received secondary education. Mother detected her eldest child's talent for singing, took her to singing course. Initially did Japanese singing course during Japanese Occupation, after that in 1950s with Zubir Said. Became known as singer through Radio Malaya. Sang background music compositions of Zubir Said for movies, and recorded on HMV, Columbia and Pathe. Came to know her late husband, Ismail Kassim, while both sang for group "Serumpun Tiga".

About her children's upbringing. Supported the talented eldest Iskandar and youngest Indra. Other two sons and one daughter also had musical talent. Played in documentary Malaysia movie. Biggest income came from royalties' of music records. Became famous in children's program initially through radio then on TV as Mat Yoyo. Her strongest style is in ballades; sang also for various important functions.
