Synopsis

Father was pushcart hawker selling porridge. He was youngest of four children. Lived on 2nd floor of shophouse at Upper Weld Road. Neighbours predominantly of Heng Hua clan who were taxi drivers and trishaw riders. How people in the vicinity gathered to offer joint prayers. Detailed on academic and sporting activities whilst at Whampoa Primary School. Recalled scout master visiting father's stall to obtain permission for him to go on three day scout jamboree. Impressions of his favourite teacher who was also his scout and sports master. Excelled in both sports and academics. Continued being a scout at Victoria Secondary. Reminiscence of his secondary school teachers.

Cited tough training by Israeli instructors. Recalled training at Good Evening and Panggang [BBQ] Hills at SAFTI. His determination and self reliance kept him free of fear. Punishment meted out by Israeli instructors. His posting to 1 SIR as Platoon Commander. Subsequent posting to 4 SIR as Company Commander. Attended senior command course and became Captain.

Spoke on the differences between OCT [Officer Cadet Training] at SAFTI and Basic Military Training for national servicemen. Recounted the "package training" for recruits. Detailed on how platoon sergeants, corporals and he himself were in charge of platoon consisting of NS men upon his promotion to 2nd Lieutenant. Felt the expectations for OCT was very much more as they were trained to be leaders. Opined that specialized training of 4 SIR was tough. Touched on the "change of life" that the soldiers underwent upon enrolment to Basic Military Training. Spoke on the various levels of education amongst NS men.
