*Interviewee's family background. His childhood in Malaysia. Father moved to Singapore to work in British Air Force in 1947. Family left Malaysia to join father. Father died in a car crash. Settled in a Hainanese dominated village in Jalan Besar. Mother found work as a domestic servant. Enrolled in Pei Tat School at the age of nine.

*Interviewee's adjustment to a mission school. Relationship between the Brothers and students in school. Interviewee was gradually attracted to the Catholic Faith. Description of students' involvement in demonstrations against National Service in 1954. The demonstration caused the expulsion of six student leaders. His involvement in a sit-in with 71students to show support for the six student leaders.

*Interviewee resumed studies in Chinese High School after the demonstrations. Attended Beatty Secondary School after graduating from upper secondary level. Obtained his High School Certificate. Interviewee was offered a place in the University of Singapore. He could not enrol due to financial difficulties. Joined Civil Service in 1961. Took an external course with the University of London in 1966. Became disillusioned with Communism after studying economics.
