Synopsis
Singapore-born, five siblings. Mother wanted her to be doctor. Favoured even though firstborn girl. Mother was modern. Lived in extended family home in Amber Road. Well-to-do background, had Hylam cooks and black-and-white amahs, did not do housework. School and medical training backgrounds. Medical training (1939-1949) - interrupted by Japanese Occupation, continued after war. Worked as posting clerk in Japanese firm during war, war experiences then, women's experiences during war.

Synopsis
School experiences; major influences. Company of siblings and cousins. Graduated 1949, husband also doctor. Married 1950, followed husband for his training in London. She studied children's health; responsible for school health service 1954 - 1983. Had three children 1950-1956. Work as school medical officer checking schoolchildren, immunisation programme, submitting reports and recommendations to policy-makers. Work conditions routine; watched for unusual signs; monitoring special cases. In school health service till 1983, rested a year, then part-time university health service and elderly service in Samkiang Hui Kuan. Pay for women doctors developed from unequal to equal. Joint incomes sufficient for children's education in England.

Work conditions before and after the People's Action Party (PAP) came into power. Working day routine. Children's enrichment lessons and English boarding schools after local primary school education; children's educational history. Concerns over children's years away from home and arrangements made. Pressures from others about sending children abroad for education. Difficult aspects of childrearing.
