Synopsis

*St George's and Kalaimagal Schools' building structure, facilities, management and students. No uniforms. All subjects were taught in Tamil. Later finished his secondary education in Umar Pulavar Tamil School. Favourite subjects were Tamil Language, Literature and Science. Studied under the street lamp at night. No tutors. Studied at Ramakrishna Mission School after school as well. Read many books as a student. Number of students in class never went above 30. Few female students. No extra-curricular activities in schools then. Started Tamil associations in all three of his schools. In 1969 wrote a play. Took part in drama and debate competitions. Funds for the school were collected from the public.

Synopsis

*When he came to Singapore at the age of 12, he attended many Tamil Scholars' speeches. As a teacher trainee he was sent to teach in Umar Pulavar Tamil School in 1967. Started as a permanent teacher in Peck Seah Integrated School. History of Umar Pulavar Tamil School. School magazines were sold to raise funds. Only students who could not join English schools would go to Tamil schools. Students from Neelambigai Tamil School came to Peck Seah School after the school was closed. The late Mr Tay Eng Soon requested him to write Tamil textbooks with relevance to local context. Joined CDIS as a specialist textbook writer. Description of his experience as a textbook writer. Many Tamil competitions were held in schools.

*Many Tamil schools: Vasugi Tamil School, E.V.R Tamil School, Thiruvalluvar Tamil School, Changi Tamil School, Kalaimagal Tamil School, Sembawang Tamil Association's Tamil School, Sembawang Methodist Church Tamil School, Pasir Panjang Tamil School, Nagammaiyar Tamil School, Bhrarathithasan Tamil School, Selegie Methodist Tamil School, Saradha Devi Tamil School, Ramakrishna Mission School, Vivekananda Tamil School and night schools at Dunlop Street. Before PAP came into power vernacular schools were not given any attention. Description of how teachers were chosen in Tamil schools and the management there. Average pay of Tamil teachers before the PAP came into power was only about $70/-. Tamil Teacher's Union has helped to promote the study of Tamil. Tamil Reform Association formed the Tamil Education Society.
