*Family background. Parents came from India. Father worked in veterinary department. Telegu speaking family but all learnt Tamil from Tamil teacher staying at their house. Studied in St. Theresa's Convent, Saradha Devi Tamil Girls' School in Norris Road and then Umar Pulavar Tamil School. Lived in a house with a spacious backyard in Tanjong Pagar near the beach. Description of the school building and its environment. No canteen in school. Travelled by rickshaw to and from school. She and her siblings helped their parents with housework.

*Married in 1972. Moved from teaching in Jalan Kayu Primary School to Haig Girls' School. Husband retired now. Has two children, the son doing National Service and the daughter doing her 'A' Levels. Both learnt Tamil as a second language. Experience training to be a teacher. Reasons for becoming a Tamil teacher. Finished one year teacher training course in 1969. Started work as a teacher in 1965 at Aravinthar Tamil Primary School. Aravinthar Primary School was functioning on the premises of Silat Primary School. Description of school life in Aravinthar Primary School. Tamil textbooks used from Malaysia. Later, some Tamil teachers in Singapore jointly published a series of Tamil books for primary schools. Description of school life in Jalan Kayu Primary School. Taught Tamil as a second language there. Extra- curricular activities for students in Jalan Kayu Primary. Tamil students participated in language related competitions and won prizes. Parent's attitude towrads their children's education.

Synopsis
*Improvement of teaching Tamil after the PAP took over government. Cultural activities were encouraged. Schools participated in Tamil festivals, debates, writing compositions and other cultural activities. Umar Pulavar Tamil High School played an important role in the promotion of Tamil language and culture. The difference between Tamil medium schools like Umar Pulavar and English medium schools that taught Tamil asa asecond language. Four language streams' teachers received same salaries after PAP governemnt came into power. Description of her experiences as a Tamil second language teacher in Jalan Kayu Primary School. Communicative approach was introduced in the teaching of Tamil in Haig Girls' school because many of came from English speaking families. She was one of twenty selected to meet the President at the Istana in 1982 on Teacher's Day. On the CDIS steering committee tasked with coming up with new textbooks. Singapore Tamil Teacher's Union and its contributions in promoting Tamil language and culture. Description of the first World Tamil Teachers Conference held in Singapore in 1992.
