Synopsis

Malayalee tailors, Tamil barbers, Indian restaurants owned by Tamils and Muslims. Manimagalai Store very popular in 1950s and 1960s. Parrot astrologers and tattoo artists used to make house calls at Naval Base and Sembawang. Flour mill, eating stalls, provision shops at Jalan Kadai catered to Naval Base residents. Narayana Mission actively organised Tamil programmes and marriages used to take place there.

Synopsis

Popularly celebrated festivals in Malayalee community are Onam and Vishu festivals which are equivalent to Deepavali and New Year in Hindu (Tamil) calendar. New clothings and vegetarian diet observed during these festivals. Malayalees frequented Krishnan Temple at Waterloo Street. Nowadays Malayalees also celebrate Tamil festivals like Deepavali and Ponggal (Harvest Festival). Variety shows, Tamil dramas and kathakali dance often staged at Naval Base during festivals.
